Volunteers will be on Southland footpaths this Friday and Saturday (27-28 Oct) for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal which supports the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.
It is estimated upwards of 10,000 people from throughout Aotearoa participate in the annual event, which raises funds for breast cancer research, education and patient support.
Each year around 240 women in the Southern region are diagnosed with breast cancer.
This year both the Southland District (SDC) and Invercargill City (ICC) mayors have publicily offered their support.
SDC Mayor Rob Scott said he would encourage anyone to get involved in the street appeal, or at the very least have a conversation with your loved ones.
“We all know someone that has been affected by breast cancer and every day nine women are diagnosed."
"Early detection is the key, so let’s talk about it, raise awareness and support each other and support our communities," Scott said.
ICC Mayor Nobby Clark said he had had both skin and thyroid cancer.
"The main message is early screening is the only way to avoid a miserable outcome,” he said.
Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s chief executive, Ah-Leen Rayner said the charity didn't receive any government funding.
"It’s only thanks to the generosity of New Zealanders that we can carry out our life-saving work."
"Your donations will bring us closer to our vision of zero deaths from breast cancer,” Rayner said.
