Invercargill MP Sarah Dowie says the petition to save Riverton's racetrack has closed with 2003 signatures.
The historic course was slated for closure in a recent plan from New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.
The petition, which was led by Ms Dowie, will be forwarded on as part of the Riverton Race Club’s submission to keep the track open.
Ms Dowie said the Riverton Easter Races were a major race meet in New Zealand, attracting 5000 enthusiasts, punters and families to Western Southland.
"The fact that 2003 people signed the petition to keep Riverton Racetrack open showed the level of support for the venue by Southlanders. Riverton has contributed significantly to the racing industry by training champion horses.
"Riverton Racing Club has a rich and successful history in Southland dating back to 1861 and with more signatures on this petition than the entire population of Riverton shows that Southlander’s are getting behind and supporting the Club.”
