National's Penny Simmonds has been confirmed as the new Invercargill MP by just 224 votes.

Mrs Simmonds held a 685-vote lead over Labour's Liz Craig on election night but the final results, announced at 2pm today, significantly narrowed the gap with Mrs Simmonds finishing on 17,929 votes to Dr Craig's 17,705. However, Dr Craig will still return to parliament as a Labour list MP.

National's Sarah Dowie won the seat over Dr Craig in 2017 with a 5579-vote majority. Although it is worth noting that the electorate boundaries have changed since the last election, the narrow margin between candidates this year is also reflected in a massive swing to Labour in the party votes cast in the south. In the Invercargill electorate, Labour secured 47.7% while National achieved just 29.7% of the party vote. This is in stark contrast to the 2017 election where the party vote was 48.2%in National's favour to Labour's 35.7%.

In the Southland electorate, Joseph Mooney has extended his election night majority of 5076 over Labour's Jon Mitchell to 5646. Mr Mooney got 19,975 votes at the final count (17,817 on election night) to Mr Mitchell's 14,330 (12,741). National secured 48.2% of the party vote in the Southland electorate to Labour's 35.7%. The boundaries for this electorate (formerly the Clutha-Southland electorate) have also changed significantly but in 2017 National was the clear favourite with 59.0% of the vote to Labour's 24.1% and its candidate Hamish Walker winning the seat 14,354 votes clear of Labour's Cherie Chapman.
