Many people have asked me what I stand for in the Southern DHB elections.

I have entered the race to ensure a strong voice for families and those facing difficulty accessing vital health services.

My experience as a regional economist and familiarity with population data has highlighted to me real evidence that health resources are not being allocated where they are needed the most. Health services appear to be directed by managerial convenience rather than hard evidence about real people, where they live, and their wellbeing.

I am alarmed that people are dying because of delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

I worry about the lack of maternity services across Southland and Queenstown.

I also fear that Dunedin’s new hospital could further undermine healthcare in Southland and Queenstown without strong advocacy.

The government is investing $1.4 billion in the new Dunedin hospital – the most expensive hospital build in New Zealand’s history. With such a hefty price tag, the government will be expecting a significant return from their investment. I worry that return may come at the cost of the long-term provision of some more specialist services at Southland Hospital.

These issues matter to me and that is why I am standing to represent you on the Southern DHB.
