Otautau's bridge which connects the two sides of the Western Southland town has been closed as flood waters in the Otautau Stream rise.
Bulk filling on either side of the bridge has commenced, and the bridges railings have been removed to eliminate any potential hazard.
The towns Main Street has also been closed as a precaution.
A Community Emergency Hib has been opened at the Otautau Sports Complex for people who need assistance.
Emergency Management Southland (EMS) declared a Southland-wide State of Emergency at 6pm this evening (21 Sep).
EMS does not expect water levels to rise to 1984 flood levels, which saw the town flooded.
However they advise residents to stay in place and only travel if essential.
