A Fiordland-based outdoor adventure society is organising winter rogaines as an easygoing and affordable way to get adventurers of all capabilities out into the bush.
The Fiordland Endurance and Adventure Racing Society (FEAR, for short) has organised daylong trail runs of the gnarly Dusky Track, hours-long swims on the Waiau River, and packrafting challenges along the Hollyford River— all for the sake of the fun of the challenge and the camaraderie that comes with it.
Now the group is turning its sights on offering the same sense of adventure for people of all ages and experience levels.
FEAR Society president Andy Magness said the society's "Winter Rogaine" orienteering series took advantage of nearby Hart's Hill just outside Te Anau. Despite the proximity to the nearby Kepler Track, getting further into the bush made for a real sense of outdoor adventure.
At the first event last month, more than 30 people of all ages were challenged to find marked checkpoints only with the help of a topographical map and a compass.
Mr Magness said some teams got to all points, others only got to a couple but, regardless, the feedback they got was "awesome". Some complete novices even returned to the course on a different day to continue finding more checkpoints in their own time.
"Everybody had a great time. Everybody that we talked to afterwards loved it."
And for the cost of $10 for non-members, it was an affordable way to get out and explore the outdoors for a couple of hours.
Upcoming rogaines would take place at different sections of Hart's Hill to keep the landscape varied, he said. Winter Rogaine #2: "Hartless" will take place on July 27, and Winter Rogaine #3: "Heart of my Harts" is scheduled for August 31.
