Police have now confirmed that one person has died following a house fire at a property in View Street, Manapouri, this morning.

FENZ Emergency services were alerted at 3.35am and responded with 3 fire engines.

Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy said there were still people unaccounted for and inquiries were ongoing to account for them.

Police will work alongside Fire and Emergency New Zealand to conduct a scene examination and enquiries over the next days, he said.

The cause of the blaze remains unexplained.

McCloy said further details will be provided when they become available.
