The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra/Te Tira Pūoro o Aotearoa returns to Invercargill on 25 September with two concert experiences for all ages.

Television personality and entertainer Suzy Cato will narrate a free performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s enchanting and timeless Peter and the Wolf. 

The universally popular story of a young boy, a duck, a bird, a cat and a fearsome wolf which hides in the forest, is loved by children and adults around the world and is a wonderful introduction to the instruments of the orchestra.

The performance will be at the family-friendly time of 3.30pm at Invercargill’s Civic Theatre.

Internationally renowned New Zealand conductor Holly Mathieson will lead the NZSO for Peter and the Wolf and the evening concert Town and Country.

Inspired by the splendour of the countryside and the energy of the city, Town and Country features the sublime first movement of Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ symphony and John Barry’s Oscar-winning title theme from Out of Africa. 

Other sensational music includes English composer Malcolm Arnold’s charming and colourful English Dances, Argentinian tango legend Astor Piazzolla’s Tangazo, the intoxicating first suite from Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat, and the great Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes, based on material he composed for the musical On The Town, which evokes 1940s New York.

Peter and the Wolf is also performed exclusively for schools in Dunedin on 23 September, and Town and Country performed in Dunedin on 24 September.
