New speed limits within Invercargill city's main shopping districts will come into force tomorrow (1 July).
The changes on Friday will see speed limits within Invercargill's inner city, Windsor and South City shopping areas reduce from 50kmh to 30kmh.

The new rules aim to make it safer for all those travelling on city roads whether in cars, on bicycles or on foot.
Council Manager Strategic Asset Planning Russell Pearson said speed and road safety was an issue being addressed nationally.

“After our recent consultation about speed limits and traffic calming, Council is reducing speeds to make the roads safer,” Pearson said.
“We know this will be a change for our community, but it’s important that drivers are patient and cautious through this adjustment. A key aspect of safety on our roads is to respect other road users and pedestrians.”

Pearson advised more speed limit changes would be introduced over the next six to 18 months, including new speed limits for sealed and unsealed roads and variable speed limits for school zones.
