How Invercargill City Council spends ratepayers' money on contractors and goods is up for review.
And as well ensuring value for money, in future council staff might also have to consider the environmental and social outcomes too.
The council is inviting submissions from the public on its proposed 'procurement policy'.
It covers the purchasing of all goods and services by or on behalf of council including community boards, the management team, all departments and staff.

ICC finance boss Michael Day says: "The policy makes sure council is consistent when dealing with suppliers, ensures value for money, that suppliers are treated ethically and fairly, that there’s probity, accountability and transparency.
"All the important things."
The new policy, which reflects the expectations of Central Government and practices of other councils, will also introduce a social element to council decision making.
"The proposed policy allows for weighting for local business, for employment of disadvantaged groups and improved environmental outcomes as well as other community outcomes, which council will consider alongside value for money for the ratepayers," Day says.

"We want to know what is most important to the public when council spends ratepayer money."

People can submit online at icc.govt.nz/procurementengagement, via email at [email protected] or by post to Strategy & Policy, Invercargill City Council, Private Bag 90104, Invercargill, 9840.
