Plans are on track to intergrate Lumsden's unique heritage, including a railway theme, into a new redeveloped playground in the Northern Southland town.
However soil tests taken on the perimeter of the current Diana Street playground, formally a railway station and yard, have revealed very low levels of hydrocarbons.
A Southland District Council (SDC) statement said that although contaminant levels were slightly elevated, they are still well below the relevant standards and won’t result in any risk to health.
Soil excavated during the construction phase of the project would be disposed of at an appropriate landfill, the statement said.
Northern Community Board chairperson Greg Tither said they were excited to see this project come to fruition.
"It will be a great community asset.”
In addition to local community input via SDC’s Long Term Plan, the Northern Community Board has also secured additional funding of $100,000 from the government three waters reform Better Off funding package.
Feedback from the community is currently being sought on the interactive panels to be included in the development.
