New “head-turning” charity event for Southland

A leading Southland salon has created a unique opportunity for creatives in the region through a new Expression of the Arts event. 

When Hair, Makeup and Visual Artist Kerry Penisula-Spain and business partner Kyla Allan of Invercargill, and the team from their salon Halcyon Creative became frustrated by a lack of creative art events in Southland they decided to create their own.

“We have so many creative people here, but they rarely get the chance to showcase their work, so we decided to provide a platform to help encourage those people to develop and challenge themselves, and to give them a opportunity to showcase their talent,” Kerry said.

The charity event titled UNLIMITED will support Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital.

It will feature two main categories, first a Live Avant Garde Hair creation followed by a Wearable Art runway show.

Throughout the night there will also be Art Auctions, open to artists willing to donate work to go under the hammer for charity.

Kerry and Kyla want to see Southlanders express themselves through art and makes a point to say the event is not a fashion competition but an art show.

She says it is about showcasing creative flair for creative minds, all while supporting a local charity. 

“As a business it was important to us that the event remained community focused, so all profits will be donated to Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital which is an organisation close to many locals including our team at Halcyon.

“We really hope the people of Southland come onboard to make this the most epic night of art.

This is their chance to get creative, think outside the box, and go wild creating some really head-turning art!”

The UNLIMITED with Halcyon Creative – Expression of the Arts charity event will be held Saturday 16th October at Meccaspresso.

Entries close 31st August 2021, event tickets on sale 1st September.

More Event Information

UNLIMITED has two main categories:

1) Wearable Arts - for anyone that considers themselves a secret or not so secret textile artist or creative artist that has always dreamed of making it on stage at WOW!

No experience necessary, and team entries are welcome.

Don't be afraid to let your mind run wild the more eccentric and out there the better!

Judging will be done on the night and includes a ‘people’s choice’ award.

2) Avant Garde Hair - Designed for all levels of experience, individuals or teams that have always wanted to create an out-of-this-world hairstyle to go on show.

This category is a live show where contestants will have 45mins to create their look and make it runway ready for judging.

It is a limitless category open to individuals or teams.

The more eccentric and over the top the better.

Art Auction: Open to artists willing to donate their own work and to have it showcased and sold for charity.

All medium welcome.

More About Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital

The Family Room is situated onsite at Southland Hospital, just metres from the Neonatal and Children’s Wards.

It acts as a haven for families to stay, rest, eat and meet whilst being only steps away from their child’s hospital bed.

By removing the stressors of everyday life, it gives families the ability to focus on what matters most – their child; and what they need most – each other.

There is no charge for families to stay or use the facility

It relies largely on the generous support of the community to keep its doors open.
