A mural painted by one of New Zealand's most prominent street artists is set to bring new life to the Manapouri Hall later this year.

The Manapouri Art Group received permission last week from the Manapouri Community Development Area Subcommittee to have the mural painted on the hall by Invercargill street artist Danny "Deow" Owen.

Manapouri Art Group secretary Ann Whatley said having such a renowned artist paint the mural was a coup for the town.

"It's a good opportunity as he's really in the public eye at the moment and that hall could do with a bit of brightening up. So I approached him and he was keen to do it... he should be quite a good drawcard."

Mrs Whatley said Owen's work in Riverton as well as his recent mural on the side of the Kelvin Hotel in Invercargill had drawn the group to contacting him.

The plan was for the mural to be painted on Labour Day weekend in October, with the public encouraged to attend to watch Owen paint the artwork.

"We're hoping to have him paint, if not all, but part of the mural on the Saturday," Mrs Whatley said.

"It's not an overly big one so we're hoping he could get it done in a day."

The artwork would represent the area around the town Mrs Whatley said, with a picture of Lake Manapouri and the Cathedral Mountains as well as a variety of native birds.
