New Variable Speed Limits signs will slow traffic down outside Southland schools and improve safety for children return to school according to Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds.

14 local schools including Ascot Community, Edendale Primary, Hauroko Valley, Hedgehope, Makarewa, Sacred Heart (Waikiwi), St John's Girls', St Patrick's (Nightcaps), St Thomas's (Winton), Te Anau and Winton have had the new signs installed.

Simmonds said drivers would be required to slow to 30km/h, or 60km/h, at peak times and depending on the road and safety requirements.

The signs are part of the Government’s approach to set safer speed limits outside schools, protecting children and their families, she said.

“Research shows that reduced speed limits, when in force at school drop-off and pick-up times, can make a real difference in keeping children safe."

“These new signs are an excellent additional safety mechanism, especially when children are first back at school for the New Year."

Simmonds said Southland was one of several regions around the country where the new Variable Speed Limits signs have been installed.
