A 46-year-old man has been charged in relation to the fatal car crash near Makarewa last year in which a young father and his infant child were killed. 

Just before 4pm on September 2, four vehicles collided on the Winton-Lorneville Highway, near North Makarewa-Grove Bush Road and Counsell Road. 

Three patients were taken to Southland Hospital and one was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Sadly, Matthew Harris and his infant daughter Ruby Harris died in the crash. 

A 46-year-old man faces two charges of careless driving causing death, two charges of careless driving causing injury and one charge of careless driving.

He is due to appear in the Invercargill District Court next week.
