The Gore Library has hit upon a 'novel' way to help children gain confidence as readers and around dogs. His name is Walter.
This black and white Springer Spaniel-Foxy cross will be at the library on Monday, April 15 and Tuesday, April 16 to meet children and listen to a few stories.
The visit is a joint initiative between the Gore District Council’s library and animal control teams.
The aim is to teach children how to be safe around dogs and give them ten minutes of one-on-one reading time with Walter.
District librarian Lorraine Weston-Webb said children who were usually shy reading aloud often gained confidence when reading to a dog.
"Dogs are great listeners and not at all judgmental.”
Similar initiatives had proved popular and successful at other libraries, Ms Weston-Webb said.
Walter’s owner Rachael Buchanan, who is a part-time member of the council’s animal control team, said Walter had to undergo behavioural testing to ensure he was right for the job.
"It’s a big responsibility and important to introduce children to dogs correctly.
"Walter loves children and is a bit of a natural at this type of thing,” she said.
The sessions are open to children aged between seven and 12 years. Spaces are limited. Book in advance by phoning 03 203 9129 or talking to Gore Library staff.
