Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews are in attendance at a large vegetation fire in the Otapiri Gorge, Southland.
The fire is around 21 hectares with a 2.3km perimeter. It is around 50 percent contained, but not under control.
High winds and the terrain have made firefighting operations difficult.
Crews will continue to work as daylight allows and be back tomorrow to work to get the fire fully contained.
People should always visit www.checkitsalright.nz to check the conditions before lighting any fire and to remain aware of weather conditions as a change in conditions could see their fire escape.
