Invercargill City Council has this evening reported a large sinkhole in the south lane of Elles Rd at the Kingswell Creek bridge.

Contractors have closed the southbound lane today to investigate the problem and make it safe.

The lane is open tonight, but they ask motorists to drive with care and to the temporary speed limit.

The lane will be closed again tomorrow, while council contractors undertake permanent repairs.

A detour south is signposted down Ball street.
