The sixth annual OneStaff Lap The Lake take place this weekend and competitors are flocking to one of the most scenic fitness events in Southland.

The event is designed for runners and walkers of all abilities, with the course being just over 10km long and relatively flat, with some small ups and downs along the way.

The course follows the road south from the Mavora Lakes camping area, before crossing the river at the swing bridge and returning to the camp area via the track on the opposite side of the lake.

Competitors compete in teams or as individuals to see how many times they can lap the lake in the six-hour timeframe, or just do a single lap.

Sections include the team relay, single, double lap, high school team or the six-hour solo. There is also a children’s race, which will be around the camping area below North Lake and is about 3km.

Event organiser Darren Frazer said registrations were already up for this year's event.

"2019 is our sixth year and numbers are looking about 10% up so (we're) expecting around 180 on the day but would love more...this year we also have some former refugees entering and I'm sure the Colombian flair will add some energy to the event."

Mr Frazer said the event helped raise funds for the Winton Salvation Army.

There will be a variety of spot prizes on the day worth close to $3000, and include emergency locator beacons, a scenic flight, a trip to Stewart Island and meal vouchers.

"I think it's probably the highest ratio of spot prizes to racers ever and some amazing prizes this year which is really cool," Mr Frazer said.

People can still enter online via www.lapthelake.co.nz or on the day from 9am. The race starts at 10am ends at 4pm.
