We are seeking to appoint a journalist to ensure that our strong community connections are enhanced and Southland stories are told in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, through our digital app, The Southland App.

Journalist

For you to be the ideal person you will show us a real passion for engaging with people. You will be a self-starter, exceptionally well organised and have demonstrated news experience using relationship management skills and knowledge.

You will need to be a digitally savvy individual with an understanding of a variety of different platforms.

This is both an external and internal customer facing role so you must be able to build effective relationships at all levels. A big part of your day will be spent connecting with members of our community and those outside it who have the ability to affect it. A key to our success is our internal relationships, so you'll need great communication skills to work with other members of our team. You will be able to show that you have the experience and ability to juggle multiple projects successfully.

You will be expected to work with our team to ensure all work is delivered on scope and time and to the highest possible standard. You will relish working under pressure and be always looking to find better ways of doing things

Your Technical Competency

• An understanding of web, mobile and application technology use
• News journalism experience or knowledge
• Accurate literacy skills
• A broad general knowledge base
• An inquiring mind and a critical thinker 
• Relationship management knowledge and experience 

Your tasks:

Among other things, you will be:

• Maintaining and growing our existing readership base
• Researching, preparing and writing articles for publication across digital and printed products
• Taking or sourcing photographs and/or video for publication across digital and printed products
• Maintaining a steady workflow ensuring both daily and weekly deadlines are met
