The Southland District Council (SDC) is the territorial authority in arguably the most unique and beautiful part of the country, including Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park, Te Anau and Stewart Island and its diverse communities, which range from tourist centres to traditional communities.

We are seeking a proven Chief Executive from inside or outside the Local Government sector who can see the bigger picture, understand and embrace the challenges communities face and be aligned with a Council which takes great pride in doing its absolute best in working together for a better Southland. 

The CE is responsible for delivering services across a wide range of council functions. The role requires a leader of people who can inspire a team of committed, professional staff who can work in partnership with the community, and who can lobby the country’s leaders to ensure the very best for district ratepayers. 

Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate a track record of success in a senior leadership role, be politically astute and possess exceptional strategic thinking, inspirational leadership and change management skills along with significant experience in a relevant technical discipline. With strong emotional intelligence the ideal person will have the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with elected members, iwi partners, stakeholders and the community.
