Southland entertainer Jenny Mitchell is paying tribute to her late grandfather whilst raising money for conservation in her latest tour.

Fresh from performances in Australia and the United States, Mitchell began her “The Bush and the Birds Tour” at Peel Forest last month and will be performing the first of her southernmost shows at the Fiordland Cinema on Friday (7^th July). From there she’ll head north again, returning to perform at Te Waka Tuia Gallery in Invercargill on 27^th July and Orokonui Sanctuary in Dunedin the following night.

The Bush and the Birds Tour is an extension of the 11^th track, The Bush and the Birds, on her latest album Tug of War, which received a 2022 Aotearoa Music Award nomination and 2023 Australian Golden Guitar nomination. It features her song Trouble Finds A Girl, which was named the APRA Best Country Song in 2022.

She said The Bush and the Birds, was a celebration of her late grandfather and his love of the land and all the creatures that live in it, that he handed down to the Mitchell whānau. In the spirit of that legacy, she’s pledged to donate 10% of the tour’s profits to Forest and Bird.

“I feel really lucky to be able to give back in this way and am so proud that our campaign has already raised $1200 for Forest & Bird. The more tickets we sell, the more we’ll be able to donate.”

The Te Anau concert will feature a guest appearance by Te Anau ukulele band From The Top, while the Invercargill show will feature support from songwriter Liv Cochrane, along with a special guest appearance from 2023 Intermediate NZ Gold Guitar winners The Dollys, who won the prestigious award with a rendition of Mitchell’s song Troubadour.
