A main street in Invercargill has partly closed from Monday (8 Aug) as part of a revamp of the inner city.

Invercargil City Council started work on the upgrade last July with the aim of making the streetscape more attractive.

Parts of Don St between Dee and Kelvin streets will be closed to motor traffic, but not to pedestrians, from 8am tomorrow until February, when the project is due to be completed.

Esk Street has been closed for the duration of the project.

Council manager Michael Day said it was the safest way to progress the upgrade, which includes remedial work below street level, continuation of work on rain gardens, and footpath paving and carriageway construction.

"Staff have been working closely with affected businesses to ensure we can best help with the disruption and we really appreciate the understanding and patience of the businesses in Don St, as well as the public, while we race towards the finish line," he said.

"Work in both Don and Esk streets is shaping up and we know excitement is building in the community for the reopening of our new city centre."
