A new two-day festival of fun for young people with a disability, is about to have its debut in Invercargill on 8th-9th July.
The iAM Games, hosted by Inclusive Activity Murihiku (iAM), will provide opportunities for people aged 5 to 21, to experience a range of adapted sports at venues around the city.
iAM is a volunteer organisation created to provide more physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities, and is being supported by Active Southland (AS).
AS disability and inclusion advisor Chris Knight said the event had been modelled on the successful Halberg Games.
“The focus of the iAM Games will be about taking part, ensuring everyone has a great time and showcasing just how easy it can be to adapt activities to be more inclusive.”
The iAM Games will cater for tamariki or rangatahi with a physical or intellectual disability, sight or hearing impairments or neurodiversity.
A wide range of sports are looking forward to providing adapted offerings, including archery, goal ball, athletics, hockey, cycling, cricket, clip ‘n’ climb, rugby, football, swimming and waterpolo, with more events to be confirmed.
“Each activity will be limited to 10 to 12 participants and go for about 40 to 45 minutes,” Knight said.
“There will be six different activities each day, so there will be heaps of variety and a lot of fun.”
