Invercargill car crash victim was father-of-three

The man who died in a car crash in Invercargill on Saturday was leading real estate agent Neil John Van Schaik.

The father-of-three died after a two-vehicle crash on Chelmsford Street, Invercargill, shortly before 10.30am. Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Police confirmed his name yesterday.

Mr Van Schaik was married to Raewyn and had three children, Olivia, Mitchell and Hadley.

The family, with "great sadness and heavy hearts" announced the passing of their "much loved husband and father Neil" in a death notice.

He had worked at Southland Real Estate Ltd since 1994 and had been in the industry for 36 years.

He was also a member of a syndicate which owns racehorse The Chosen One, which finished fourth in last year's Melbourne Cup.

"Police extend their sympathies to Neil's family and friends at this difficult time," a police spokesperson said.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10.30am, Thursday, May 6, at Stadium Southland.
