Two people have been flown to hospital following a jet boat crash near Queenstown.

The two are each in a moderate condition after the incident. One has been flown to Southland Hospital and one to Queenstown Lakes District Hospital.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash on the Dart River, north of Glenorchy shortly before midday.

The Rescue Coordination Centre said those injured had been transported via two rescue helicopters to Dunedin and Queenstown to receive medical treatment.

The crash involved a private jet boat and emergency services were alerted after a personal locator beacon was activated, a spokesperson said.

"Initially, a nearby helicopter scouted the scene for the coordination centre, while two helicopters with medical capability were tasked from Dunedin and Te Anau."

The police confirmed they were alerted but were not required.
