Hokonui Line Project to Drive Growth and Enable Decarbonisation in SouthlandFonterra's Edendale plant.

A major electricity project is set to strengthen eastern Southland’s energy network, enable decarbonisation, and support future growth.

The Power Company Limited (TPCL) has announced plans for the Hokonui Line, a new 110kV overhead line between a new Transpower substation on Cuttance Road and a new Fonterra substation at Edendale.

The 12.5km line — a partnership between TPCL, Transpower and Fonterra — will deliver increased capacity to support industrial growth, including Fonterra’s new UHT plant and two electrode boilers, and help the site transition away from coal.

TPCL Group Chair Peter Moynihan said the Hokonui Line was a critical investment in Southland’s future.

“This project ensures our network has the strength and resilience needed to meet increasing demand, support industry, and enable the transition to a low-emissions economy. It’s also a great example of what can be achieved when infrastructure partners work together toward a common goal - and we’re proud that PowerNet, as part of the TPCL group, will be delivering the build.”

The project is expected to bring wider regional benefits, including job creation, improved network performance, and stronger support for Southland’s major primary industries.

Construction will begin in November 2025, with the line build starting September 2026 and completion expected by August 2027.
