A heavy rain warnings have been issued for Southland and Otago regions this evening (20 Mar).
Emergency Management Southland advised 80 to 120mm of rain could be expected, on top of what already had fallen, with peak rainfall rates of between 15 to 25mm per hour.
Police advise streams and rivers could rise rapidly with surface flooding and slips possible.
Areas between Balcutha, and Waikouaiti are likely to experience the most rain, they said.
Driving conditions may be hazardous, prompting Police to recommend people to avoid any unnecessary travel and if possible and to stay indoors.

The heavy rain warning is valid till 12am on Tuesday (21 Mar).
