A heavy rain warning has been issued today for Fiordland by Emergency Management Southland.

It relates to that area north of Doubtful Sound and is from 9am till 2pm today.

It is expected that between 40 and 80mm may accumulate during this time with peaks of 15 to 25mm/hr and include thunderstorms.

EMS advise this heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly and surface flooding and slips may also be possible.

Driving conditions may be hazardous.
