Term 3 at Hauroko Valley Primary School is well underway, and already our ākonga have stepped up to every opportunity with energy, pride, and purpose – whether performing on stage, representing our school in sport and agriculture, or exploring the wild beauty of Fiordland.

One of the standout achievements to end Term 2 came from The Livestock Legends – our AgriKidsNZ team, made up of Angus, Dusty, and Jake – who proudly represented Hauroko Valley Primary at the FMG Young Farmers Grand Final.

Competing against the best in the country, the boys placed 2nd in the agricultural quiz and modules, and an impressive 6th overall in the race-off. Their success was a true testament to teamwork, commitment, and resilience, backed by the generous support of their families and community, who got behind their fundraising efforts.

Thank You to Fowle Contracting and Clifden Rural Women. We’re incredibly proud of their achievement and how they represented our kura.

In the world of sport, students laced up their netball shoes for the CSNC Netty Festival in Winton. Hauroko Valley was represented by a spirited Year 5&6 team and two Year 7&8 teams, who competed with heart, determination, and positive team spirit throughout the day.

For many, it was an opportunity to put training into action, demonstrate great sportsmanship, and have fun connecting with peers from across the region.

Back at school, our learners have been sharing their voices in powerful ways. Our Year 0–3 tamariki took to the stage for their poetry presentations, memorising and performing high-quality poems with confidence and flair.

This early introduction to oral language builds a strong foundation in literacy, expression, and self-belief.

Our Year 4–8 students also recently completed their speech writing and presentations, crafting original speeches on a range of thought-provoking, humorous, and heartfelt topics.

They then presented these with confidence, clarity, and impressive delivery – a reflection of the high expectations we hold for written and oral language, and the pride our students take in their work.

Their ability to communicate ideas thoughtfully and passionately continues to grow every year.

Adding to a term of unforgettable experiences, our Year 7&8 students recently returned from their environmental camp in Deep Cove, deep in the heart of Fiordland National Park.

Travelling aboard the Fiordland Navigator, students explored the magic of Doubtful Sound, encountering dolphins, tawaki (Fiordland crested penguins), fantails, weka, glow worms, and even catching sight of the mischievous kea.

Through bush walks, wildlife spotting, and nature immersion, students gained a deepened understanding of conservation and their role as kaitiaki of our environment.

At Hauroko Valley Primary, every term brings rich, real-world learning that reflects our values of hauora, village (our people), perseverance, and success.

Whether it’s delivering a speech, nailing a netball pass, identifying a native bird, or standing proud on a national stage, our students are constantly growing as confident, capable learners who know the value of hard work and heart.

We’re proud of every achievement this term – and of the vibrant, supportive school community that makes it all possible. Bring on the rest of Term 3!
