An $8 million funding package for Southland's Just Transition was announced in Invercargill today (23 May) by Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods.
The government package is to support a Southland engineering and manufacturing cluster, COIN Southland, development of Southland aquaculture and implementing Southland's long-term plan - Beyond 2025.
“This funding will help create new industries, transition workers and support long-term planning for the region,” Woods said.
Last week's budget also promised $35.5 million over the next 4 years to promote the conversion of transport and industries to hydrogen, with the scheme starting in Southland's Just Transition area.
The government has set aside $100m for green hydrogen conversion projects.
The Just Transition initiative is a comprehensive plan developed to ensure the region continues to thrive regardless of decisions regarding Tiwai Aluminium Smelter.
Southland Just Transition Enduring Oversight Group (EOG) co-chair Aimee Kaio said she welcomed the governments continued support of Southland aquaculture.
The government has already invested $4 million in several regional initiatives, including E tū’s job match programme, thriving Southland's Food and Fibre Investment Accelerator project and the development of the region's new Long-Term Plan, Beyond 2025.
Additionally, the development of a new community collaboration programme, Connected Murihiku, is underway.
Southland Just Transition Enduring Oversight Group (EOG) co-chair Neil McAra said the government’s support for early adoption of green hydrogen in Southland was a good development.
The commitments present an opportunity for Southland to establish new industry while also creating a stronger, more resilient community.
