Two concrete pillars commemorating pupils of the former Charlton School who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II have found a new home.

The memorial pillars stood for decades at the Charlton Hall, about 6km south of Gore.

They were recently offered to the Gore District Council when the hall was put up for sale.

Gore District Council Parks and Recreation Manager Ian Soper said the local hall committee was keen to ensure the pillars were retained in the community as they are an important part of the area’s history.

“We were more than happy to help both with funding the relocation and moving the pillars to their new site.”

The pillars now stand at the entrance of the Charlton Park Cemetery RSA burial garden dedicated to those who served their country in times of conflict.

Each pillar features a marble plaque with the names of 10 men killed in WWII inlaid in lead lettering.

Ex-pupils of the Charlton School, which taught children in the area from 1886 to 1936, erected the pillars.
