Southlanders have been humming with activities to raise funds for local teams taking on next month's Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland.

Three people stood out from the rest at fitness classes at the newly rebranded Carve Fitness in Winton on Saturday (April 13).

Winton Volunteer Fire Brigade's Chloe Milne, Steve Turton, and Guy Johnstone pedalled stationary bikes in full fire gear as part of back-to-back-to-back workouts to raise funds for the challenge.

Carve Fitness co-owner Georgia Herdman said 45 people took part in the promotional workout for three consecutive classes, which raised around $1000 for the brigade. Other gyms also helped sponsor bikes for the event as well.

The cycling sessions took two-and-a-half hours in total. While people had the option to take turns on the bike in teams, Miss Herdman said around 85% attempted the classes solo.

It won't be the only time volunteers train in full regalia for the cause. Olivia Ross and Rachel Naylor of the Mossburn Volunteer Fire Brigade will be training in full gear on a stepper outside the Dome Cafe this Friday (April 19) and will be accepting donations.

For the less athletically inclined. Volunteers across Southland have been raising funds through cheese rolls, barbecues, quiz nights, raffles

and more.
