Winter may be over but Southlanders can get a taste of one of the most popular winter sports during the school holidays.
An ice rink will be installed inside ILT Stadium Southland in Invercargill, with the rink being the first of its kind to ever appear in Southland.
The artificial art synthetic rink is being brought from Eventfinda Stadium in Auckland, and stadium events and programmes co-ordinator Alex Morrison-Bailey said it would be an exciting opportunity for people to experience the thrill of ice skating.
She said the rink would have extra appeal to skaters given the ease of use compared to a regular ice rink.
"I think because you’re not going to get wet if you fall over. It’s not cold. You can come and have a go without the hassle of having to bring spare clothes, especially for young kids. It’s great for them to have a go on it and learn."
The rink was being transferred from the North Island via train and truck, and Ms Morrison-Bailey said it took around eight hours to put together.
Session times would run between 4pm and 8pm each day, while the rink would also open between 10am and 2pm during weekends and the first week of the school holidays.
The rink will open on September 20 and remain in place until October 5. Tickets are $20 and available at the stadium, with group bookings also available.
