Southland Hospital’s Orthopaedic Department is opening its doors to the public this afternoon, Saturday, May 15.
The aim is to allow Southlanders to meet the surgeons and other orthopaedic staff, see the equipment, prosthetics and learn about the work done to treat patients with broken bones and other orthopaedic conditions.
The free event will take place from 1-3pm. Everyone is welcome, there is no need to register.

It is part of a New Zealand-wide series of ‘walks’ raising money for the Wishbone Orthopaedic Research Foundation of New Zealand, which funds orthopaedic research.
Southland Hospital Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Pierre Navarre, event coordinator along with the organising committee, said the Southland Wishbone Walk would take the form of a behind-the-scenes orthopaedic walking tour of Southland Hospital.
"It will be a hands-on experience, where people get to participate in activities, handle implants, see demonstrations and even have their blood pressure checked by nursing students from the Southern Institute of Technology.
"They will also be able to see a simulated operating room suite at the Hospital’s Education Centre with the orthopaedic team performing a total knee replacement procedure.

"People can come into the simulated operating theatre, where the team will be scrubbed, gowned, gloved and masked, and they can see the surgical equipment used in this complex operation."
Medical companies will also have displays, so members of the public can see the equipment and medical supplies that are used in orthopaedics.
Staff volunteers throughout the hospital have been involved in planning and supporting this public event, as Southlanders have always shown a real interest in health and the work done at Southland Hospital.
The event will begin at the main entrance to the Hospital, where people will be given a map of the activities, demonstrations and displays. Volunteers will also be on hand to answer questions and provide support.
"We hope people will make time in their Saturday to support this event, Southland Hospital and orthopaedic research in New Zealand."
