Gardening: Diacks Nurseries September 4th newsletter

What's Happening

Spring has arrived but wouldn't you know it the snow did as well... We never got any here but the very close surrounding districts did.

We have also had some good frosts this week as well.

The temperatures have been pretty good for gardening though.

The customers are all out and about and plants are selling well.

We have some good tomato plants ready and our VINING tomato is in big demand.

A big thank you to our team for coming up with the idea, the growing of the plants and getting them into the shop for sale.

It is for a very good cause and $1.00 from every tomato sold goes to the Southland charity hospital.

The Vining tomato is a very tasty vigorous variety with large fruit and a great shelf life.

It tolerates cooler conditions as well.

Courgettes, cucumber & pumpkins are all out for sale now as well but these may need to be covered until the nights warm up a bit more.

Plenty of good vege plants ready to go in the ground now before the bugs all come out.

It is a good idea to throw a few Neem granules around at planting time to deter the insects.

All pruning and spraying should be done by now as the leaves and buds are forming on the fruit trees and roses.

Now is a good time to buy your fruit trees and roses before they break into leaf and bud.

The shops are now full of new stock.

The Rhododendrons are looking fantastic in bud.

Just waiting to burst into colour.

A good range of colours and different growing heights.

Camellias are the same with some flowering already.

The evergreen azaleas are starting to show colour now but the last of the ericas are nearly finished.

Dahlia bulbs still available but not many Lillies left.

Plenty of fertiliser in stock for every use under the sun.

You name it we can provide.

A lot of our fertilisers as well as our potting mixes are all made on site.

We can do bags or trailor loads of dirt mixes or we can deliver on a Friday.

Seed potatoes are selling well.

Have now sold out of Swift, Liseta, Heather, Red King, & Jersey Bennes.

Time to plant your main crops.

Desiree, Red Rascal and Agria are the main varieties and these mature over 100 days and store well over winter.
