GARDENING: Diacks Nurseries September 18th Sept

-

WHATS HAPPENING

The weather has been against us this week with plenty of rain and cold temperatures to slow the gardening down.

We are ready to go as soon as the weather picks up again.

Seed racks are full and tomato and veges benches all topped up.

The VINING tomato plant is selling well.

We are donating $1.00 from every sale to the charity hospital so please come and buy your tomato plant as it is for a very good cause.

Best annuals at the moment are the lobelia, pansies and sweet peas.

These are really good strong plants.

There have also been some perennial petunias and daisies come in over the weekend and next week the geraniums are supposed to be arriving in.

These are great for pots.

Adds colour!!!

The flowering cherries are all looking beautiful around the town at the moment BUT with the wind and rain we have been getting I am sure the blossoms will not last long.

The later flowering cherries are almost better to have in as when they flower the weather is usually? more settled.

The double varieties flower at Labour Weekend and are stronger trees.

Kanzan (pink) & Shimdtsu Sakura (pink opening to white) to name a couple.

Tai Haku (great white) are the best for driveways and avenue planting.

Magnolia's are another beautiful flowering tree that tends to get hit with the winds so it is important to plant in a sheltered spot.

The stellata varieties have smaller flowers and are lower growing like a shrub.

Evergreen magnolias are another option.

They flower in the summer and produce creamy white flowers.

The maples are just breaking into leaf now.

We have a very good selection.

The smaller Japanese maples are great for specimen planting or for in pots in sheltered areas.

Gardening is a perfect time to get the family all together and involved in the planting.

Let them help choose as then they are more likely to eat it also.

Plant them some peas (straight from the pod in the garden) strawberries or raspberries.

It is good for them to have their own tools and learn how to use them and look after them.

Teach them a weed from a plant and the names of what is growing so they can start to recognize them.

We have just had some kid seeds arrive.

BEHEMOTH.....            Giant pumpkin

DINOSAUR GOURDS....     Prehistoric monster mix

LITTLE TED....            Fluffy sunflowers

MAGICAL CREATURES...   Fairy flower mix

POP START....            Strawberry popcorn

YUMMY UFO"S....         Alien scallopini zucchini

Come in and check them out.

A great way to kick start a wee garden for the small people in the house.
