GARDENING: Diacks Nurseries September 11th Sept

WHATS HAPPENING

We have had some good rain and some very warm temperatures so it has been a good start to the spring gardening.. The 1st of the seed potatoes should be looking through now. Make sure you mound them up to encourage more potatoes. Keep that sneaky frost off them though. Potato seed has been in huge demand this year with many varieties sold out now. If you have not already got your spuds it is time to do so now....

Vege plants are also in hot demand... especially cauliflower & broccoli. We have a new variety of cauli you may want to give a try called Twister. Many varieties of cabbage out also from the small pointed to the large drumhead types, red and mini's.

Herbs are looking good and ready for planting but it might be still a wee bit cool for basil...

Tomato plants are ready to go. Plenty of good strong grafted and hybrid varieties in single plants or seedlings in a 6 pack. Courgettes and cucumbers are also looking good and growing daily. Capsicums are still coming.. A bit slow at the moment.

A great batch of flower plants in the store now. Plenty of Lobelia which is good for borders or trailing for baskets. Livingstone daisies are looking great and they are an all time favourite of many of our customers.

The magnolias and flowering cherries are starting to about town and are looking pretty spectacular... If you see one that takes your fancy bring a branch in and we can match it up for you..

Viburnums, daphnes, boronias & jasmine would have to be the best perfumes at the moment.

Queen wasps are out now looking for a new home to lay their thousands of eggs. Now is the time to trap them before they establish around your house! WASP MAX HONEY POT TRAP is just the ideal thing for this job. Poison free, reusable and only $17.99..

Fruit trees are selling extremely well. We have a few more Moorpark apricots in for anyone that missed out. Plums are in flower as are the early peaches and nectarines.

We have just had some wintersweet bushes arrive in store. These are proving quite popular at the moment and we have been taking orders.

Strawberries are looking good. Get some in now you will have fruit for xmas day. Also dont forget to get the spuds, peas & beans in for your xmas lunch.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING

Preparing for spring planting. Get your compost in by the bag or the trailor load as you need it. Get fertilizer for every crop and plants and seeds ready to go. Plenty of choices and we are able to give advise for free and with a smile.

CAPSICUM FACT

Also known as Bell Peppers

Capsicums are extremely high in vitamin C and high in vitamin A, and depending on the variety, they may also contain significant quantities of vitamins B6 and K, and folate, and they also contain many other vitamins and minerals.

The bell pepper is the fruit of plants in the Grossum cultivar group of the species Capsicum annuum. Cultivars of the plant produce fruits in different colours, including red, yellow, orange, green, white, and purple. Bell peppers are sometimes grouped with less pungent pepper varieties as "sweet peppers".
