Poppy always said that: August is the time to plant Roses, Fruit Trees, Lilies, Asparagus, Strawberries, and get your potatoes sprouted.
What's Happening
Just enough rain (all mainly overnight) to water the gardens.
Still lots of sun during the day with temperatures of between 10 & 15 degrees.
The latter is close to T shirt weather!
The early flowering cherries are starting to flower around the town as are some of the 1st camellias and rhododendrons.
Christmas Cheer & Cornubia Red look stunning.
Plants for glasshouse planting are trickling into the shop.
Tomato plants are looking good.
We have a wide range of varieties and prices.
Seedlings in 6 packs at $5.99, and single grafted & hybrid varieties are $7.99.
Plenty to choose from and if you have trouble deciding we can help.
Cucumbers are in store for the weekend as are courgettes & pumpkins although it could be a wee bit on the cool side for them just yet.
There is a good variety of vege seedlings ready.
Cabbage, cauli & broccoli planted now will mature in November before all the bugs arrive to help themselves to your crops.
Flower plants are growing everyday.
There is a good batch of pansies ready, & the 1st of the livingston daisies (an old favourite) & lobelia are ready.
Great for baskets and borders.
Dahlia bulbs have arrived in and there are still a few lillies.
Get these planted now.
Yam tubers can be still planted and we have the last of the asparagus crowns on the shelf.
Limited supply of green but quite a few purple still to be had.
Seed potatoes are selling well.
Get some planted now for Christmas.
The early varieties consist of Liseta,Rocket & the old favourite Jersey Benne.
We have a good supply of of red spuds... Heather, Desiree & Red Rascal are a good main crop.
Potatoes sell by the kg, or bagged in a 3kg bag, or we can do a 25kg sack for paddock planting.
Fruit trees are selling extremely well.
We have sold out of apricot Moorpark but most other favourites are available.
What You Should Be Doing
Getting your garden and tunnel houses ready for spring.
We sell trailer loads of compost to improve your soil structure, fertiliser for all the plants and FREE advice for any learners.
Mow the lawns for the 1st time if you haven't already done so and do some moss control with sulphate of iron.

Apples are one of those fruits that are available for sale year round, even though the actual season for harvesting is rather short. Thanks to technology, apples are able to be stored and preserved, between the gap of being harvested and actually making it to market. So in short, an apple purchased and eaten today, may actually be up to a year old.
