An art exhibition with a twist is set to be unveiled by Special Olympic Southland later this month to raise funds for a city athlete heading to Italy for the Winter World Games in March.

Invercargill Alpine skier Grant McKenzie is part of a nine-strong squad of Kiwi athletes attending the Games, New Zealand Snow Sports athletes’ first opportunity to showcase their talents on the world stage since the 2017 World Winter Games in Austria, where the New Zealand team won 18 medals.

Special Olympics Southland Board Chair Miriam McKenzie said the fundraiser would see artists from throughout Murihiku and Aotearoa contributing an original piece of work to be sold.

“Proceeds from the sales of these incredible artworks will be going towards Grant’s trip to the Winter Worlds, as well as supporting athletes attending the 2025 Summer Games of Special Olympics Games in Christchurch later this year.”

The Special Olympics Southland Fundraiser has been organised by Special Olympics Southland in partnership with He Waka Tuia and held at Bill Richardson Transport World, who were generously providing the space at no cost to the organisers, from Friday, January 31 to Saturday, February 8, she said.

Artists from across the country have been invited to participate by creating original artworks on 250mm square boards. These artworks, diverse in style and technique, will be priced to ensure accessibility and affordability.

“The twist is that until the moment of purchase the artist will be anonymous,” Miriam said.

“This not only makes buying art all the more exciting, but also symbolises the unveiling of talents and potential, mirroring the mission of Special Olympics Southland in showcasing abilities over disabilities.

“By participating in this exhibition, artists not only contribute their creativity but to also join a movement that celebrates diversity, breaks down barriers, and champions the transformative power of sports. The fundraiser promises to be a vibrant celebration of art, community spirit, and unwavering support for athletes striving to achieve their dreams on the global stage.”

The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday, 31 January to Saturday 8 February between 10am-5pm.
