A Fiordland mountain could soon bear the name of the former Prime Minister Norman Kirk.

A proposal has been lodged to call the currently unnamed peak Mount Kirk in his honour.

It sits west of Lake Manapouri - a nod to Norman Kirk's role in the Save Manapouri environmental campaign.

Public consultation on the name opens today and will run until 19 December.

Norman Kirk served as Prime Minister from 1972 until his death in office two years later.
