A fire broke out at midnight on Awarua Peninsula and has now spread to 250 hectares with an 8 km perimeter. Fire crews have been working through the night, and helicopters began operations at first light this morning (30 Jan) to help contain the blaze. The blaze started at about midnight and had burned through 126ha overnight.
Fire and Emergency has seven crews on the ground and said helicopters would begin responding at first light.
There was no risk to nearby buildings, including the aluminium smelter, it said.
