The Department of Conservation’s Fiordland office has cancelled all its Conservation Week events due to Covid-19 level 2 restrictions, but the Fiordland Trails Trust second weeding bee beside the Lakes2Lake Trail will continue this Friday as planned.
Last Friday’s weeding bee on the Lake2Lake Trail was a Conservation Week partner event and could go ahead because it was a trust initiative.
But a national directive means DOC-led events cannot go ahead until after the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.
Trust member Sue Lake said just five people turned up last Friday to tackle some weed shrubs and blackberry bushes.
She hoped more people would turn up for the repeat effort this Friday (August 21).
“[We] still managed to get quite a lot of work done on a beautiful sunny day. We removed a lot of weeds over an area of approximately 150 metres between the Fiordland Trail and the lake shore. The area was quite difficult with weed shrubs growing through blackberry,’’ she said.
The weeding bee will be based at the Marakura Yacht Club from 10am until 2pm.
