People across the country are being asked to give their feedback on the future direction of Milford Sound / Piopiotahi this month.

A masterplan for the iconic destination is being developed through the Milford Opportunities Project.

The nationwide survey opens tomorrow and runs until the end of October to discuss possible options for Milford Sound, the only road leading into it, Te Anau and the surrounding regions.

The project's governance group chair, Dr Keith Turner, said they were nearing the critical decision point about what would go into the masterplan and wanted to hear from anyone interested.

"Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is an amazing place and we need to ensure the masterplan we create can be used to inspire its preservation as the most unique experience and place in the world," Dr Turner said.

It is the last chance for public feedback which will be analysed and reported back to the governance group. That will then be put forward as recommendations to the government in the plan.

More than 1000 responses were received when a nationwide survey was conducted in July, which are being used by the governance group.

The masterplan is due in May or June next year.
