Children and dogs are being warned to avoid the Waihopai River, north of Queen's Drive, after toxic algae was found by Environment Southland (ES).
The location is within the Invercargill city boundary and has a popular walking and cycling track nearby.

A toxic algae alert in place for Waihopai River at Kennington has now been removed, while the alert for the Waiau River near the Excelsior Creek inflow remains.
Algae regularly occurs during periods of fine weather and stable river flows. While most algae is harmless, some species can produce toxins and rapidly bloom to high levels.
Toxic algae can pose significant health risks to people and animals if swallowed or through contact with the skin.
ES regularly monitors the province's waterways but admits they can't monitor everywhere.
ES advise you see a doctor immediately if you experience health symptoms after contact with contaminated water and take your animals to a vet immediately if they have consumed toxic algae or contaminated water.
