Duck carcasses have caused a stink at Southland disAbility Enterprises.
Several bloody dead birds were recently retrieved from products delivered to the Invercargill facility for manual processing by people.
“As you can see, they aren’t particularly pleasant for our people to have to pick off the line... All we really require bin holders to do is to follow the product accepted list on the WasteNet site and understand that people sort the material with their hands,’’ general manager Hamish McMurdo said.
Mr McMurdo said he could not verify rumours a whole load of recycling materials had to go going to landfill because of the dead ducks.
“The load would need to be contaminated throughout the product for it to be rejected,’’ he said.
Anyone unsure what to put in their yellow bin could check on the WasteNet website, he said.
Acceptable items for the yellow bin are clean recyclables, being plastic packaging, paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, non-food grade white polystyrene and clean metal cans and tins.
Southland disAbility Enterprises also received a ceramic toilet in recycling products delivered to the facility on May 11, the first day of recycling after the COVID-19 closures.
A Bond Contracts rubbish truck caught fire last week, the cause thought to be careless disposal of hot ashes into a wheelie bin.
