Council nominations are in

Southlanders now know who's standing in October's local government elections, after nominations closed at noon today.


Southland District Council has published what is likely the final list of candidates on its website.


There are six people vying for the position of mayor: Wendy Baker, Donald Byars, Kirsty Pickett, Robin Scott, incumbent mayor Gary Tong and Geoffrey Young.



Five people have been nominated for the three seats on Mararoa Waimea Ward: Stephen Chernishov, Sarah Greaney, Thomas O'Brien, Robin Scott and Matthew Wilson.


And the three vacancies for the Waiau Aparima Ward are hotly contested, with six candidates: Jaspreet Boparai, Donald Byars, Derek Chamberlain, Troy Holiday, Gene Lawrence and Robin McCall.


Oreti Ward's three seats will also be contested, by five candidates: Katie Allan, Wendy Baker, Darren Frazer, Christine Menzies and Margaret Ruddenklau.



There are only two candidates for the two Waihopai Toetoe Ward seats: Paul Duffy and Julie Keast.


And, finally, three people will contest the one seat representing Stewart Island/Rakiura Ward: Ulrike Herzhoff, Aaron Joy and Jon Spraggon.


There's also a decent number of candidates for most of the community board in Southland district.

For Invercargill City Council, there are a whopping 10 people standing for mayor and 33 for council seats.


Incumbent long-serving Sir Tim Shadbolt is being challenged by Noel Peterson, Nobby Clark, Ria Bond, Tom Morton, Darren Ludlow, Steven Chernishov, Toni Biddle, Marcus Lush and Jaqueline Walter.


Standing for the 12 council seats are, deep breath: Noel Peterson, Tom Morton, Ria Bond, Tom Campbell, Trish Boyle, Bevan Smith, Malcolm Loan, David Pottinger, Lisa Tou-McNaughton, Darren Ludlow, Alex Crackett, Peter Kett, David Loudon, Lesley Soper, Allan Arnold, Kerry Hapuku, Ian Pottinger, Rebecca Amundsen, Barry Stewart, Grant Dermody, Kevin Mulrooney, Graham Lewis, Terry King, Karl Herman, Sir Tim Shadbolt, Kevin Brown, Ian Edwards, Rick Morrell, Nigel Skelt, Francine Knowles, Eddie Blackburn, Peter Marshall, and Dene Allen Kari Graber.



There are also 11 candidates for the five seats on the Bluff Community Board, and a dozen for the six vacancies on the Invercargill Licensing Trust.


In Gore, incumbent mayor Tracy Hicks will be challenged by Ben Bell for the mayoral chains.


Only one candidate, John Gardyne has been nominated for the one Waikaka Ward seat and only Stewart MacDonell is standing for the one Kaiwera-Waimumu Ward seat.


The Gore Ward is popular, however, with nine candidates for the five seats: Glenys Dickson, Nick Grant, Bret Highsted, Robert McKenzie, Paul McPhail, Stephen McStay, Bronwyn Reid, Janeen Reti and Reuben Turipa.



Neville Philipps is the only candidate for the one Mataura Ward seat but there are five candidates for the three council-at-large seats: Liz Adams-Gray, Steven Dixon, Keith Hovell, Richard McPhail and Joe Stringer.


There are also decent numbers for all the community board seats and Mataura Licensing Trust seats.

Environment Southland also has candidates for all positions.


Alan Baird and Paul Evans are contesting the one Fiordland Regional Constituency seat; while Alastair Gibson, Jeremy McPhail and Danny Mitchell will duke it out for the two Eastern-Dome Regional Constituency seats.


Nicol Horrell is the only candidate for the Western Regional Constituency, while Lloyd McCallum and Jonathan Pemberton will contest the Southern Regional Constituency seat. Russell MacPherson and Peter McDonald will contest the Hokonui Regional Constituency seat. 


Neville Cook, Robert Guyton, Lyndal Ludlow, Gemma McGrath, Philip Morrison, Bruce Pagan, Maurice Rodway and Eric Roy will be contest the six Invercargill-Rakiura Regional Constituency seats.
