Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker will take on the roles of Spokesperson for Forestry, Spokesperson for LINZ and Associate Spokesperson for Tourism in National's caucus reshuffle announced yesterday.

“I’m honoured to be taking on these roles within the National Party, and will work hard to be a strong voice for these sectors but also hold this Government to account in these areas,” Mr Walker said.

“Forestry is the third-largest exporter in our primary sector and the industry needs support to take advantage of this, not a flawed billion trees policy which is crippling rural New Zealand.”

“There is also the present Forests (Regulation of Log Traders and Forestry Advisers) Amendment Bill, which has just passed its first reading in Parliament and is just red tape in an attempt to rein in the cowboys of the sector but will do little in addressing the real issues.”

Hundreds of high country farmers had struggled for decades with Land and Information New Zealand (LINZ) which should be focusing on working with these farmers, he said.

“Overseas investment is also hugely important, especially for areas like Queenstown, and we need to ensure New Zealand benefits from this.”

“Tourism is one of our country’s largest exporters, making up about 16% of GDP, and the Lakes District is its heartbeat.”

“The sector is struggling and needs a strong team to support it through this COVID-19 pandemic with a robust plan, not just a domestic marketing campaign.”

“I’m humbled and incredibly excited to be taking on these new roles within the National Party caucus as we work to rebuild New Zealand.”
