Celebrating Southland Schools

12 September 2024, 1:14 AM

CLASS ACTION: Wallacetown School

-

As we worked away through Term 2, Wallacetown School was a busy wee place, with Jumping June celebration, two teams competed in the Young Einstein Quiz in Winton, Kiwi Can, Kapa Haka practice, assemblies, Central Cup and all the learning and happenings in our classrooms.

The mid year reports went home and showed what an excellent start to the year our students have had both in and out of the classroom.

We welcomed Spencer to Room 1

The Fundraising group also had a Jolly Soles Sock Fundraiser – plenty of cool colours and funky designs !!

Some are still available from the School office $10.00 a pair

Southland Cross Country - Well done to Zaria who competed at Southland Cross Country on Friday the 14th.

The field of competitors is big with up to 90 students racing per age group.

Zaria can be immensely proud of her effort and finished 15th in the 11 year old girls section.

Matariki Celebration Day - Thank you to all the families for their vegetable donations – we had a delicious vegetable soup for lunch!

Matariki ‘Art Showcase’ - The classes had worked hard on their art work for the ‘Art Showcase’ which was on display– Families popped in to view it during our celebration day, or when they came for the Parent Interviews.

There were some fantastic pieces of art!

A huge congratulations and well done to Room 4, Whaea Nish and Miss C on their recent success at the Murihiku Art Awards for 2024.

They were awarded the Whanaungatanga Award for their Kite entry which they had on display at our Matariki Art Showcase.

As well as their award they were also presented with a $150 prezzy card.

In the July school holidays we had a working bee on the bark playground!

It’s now fenced off as we prepare for the new bark chip.

A massive thanks to Royden and Amy and the small group of helpers who on the first Saturday of the holiday break cleared out parts of the old bark chip and put gravel down to help with the drainage in this area.

(watch this space)!

A huge thank you to Mitchell and Jackson who spent the first day of the holiday break helping out at our working bee!

A huge thank you to Scafftech Solutions Ltd. for the donation, delivery and installation of our fencing around the bark playground while we wait for the next part of these works!

Kiwi Can-Garden Project - On Monday 5th August our classes worked on the next part of the garden project by the pool area, as well as helping to build our brand-new picnic table!

A huge thanks to Phil from Kiwi Can, Margie and Paul for making this happen!

Thank you to Ms McKenzie for your co-ordination of this project.

Wallacetown School 160th Celebrations - On the 24th of July the 160th Jubilee committee had an inital catch-up to meet and started discussing ideas for our celebration planned for King’s Birthday in 2025.

Welcome to Room 1 Matthew

We’ve had a great start to Term3 and there was an Olympic buzz in our classrooms and around the school until our own Mini Olympics on Friday 9 August!!

We kicked off with the opening ceremony 9:25am out on the court, with the first round of sporting events started at 9:45am.

It was great to cheer on our different countries competing and to see them enjoying the events on offer throughout the day!

Team GB took out the Gold Medal this year, Brazil the Silver and Australia the Bronze

Polyfest 2024 - As part of our commitment to Polyfest and the Murihiku Trust we released Whaea Nish from school for the week of Polyfest so she took up her team leader position – this position involved her organising the logistics and smooth running of schools arriving, moving around while they are there, performing and leaving at the end.

Our time on stage was Thursday 29th August at 11:40am – we are extremely proud of our students and would like to thank everyone who came to watch us and for all the lovely feedback and comments.

Polyfest is so much more than just our performance and it was heartwarming last week walking past the classrooms seeing/hearing Polyfest being live streamed and at the break times students having the opportunity to request performance viewings of schools and early childhood centres they knew had performed or where they have siblings.

The catch-ups with our students who went to watch their siblings/family perform, seeing our friends who have moved schools on stage and seeing our past students who have continued on with Kapa Haka at secondary school perform all makes the week that extra special.

This year we were able to join Ko Taku Reo on stage for their last song and this was definitely a highlight for us.

There’s a lot that we do on a Thursday together during the year so being able to share this experience was extra special to us!

A big thank you to Whaea Nish in her work behind the scenes in getting us ready for Polyfest, and for the opportunity for Indi and Marco being able to join her on Friday to volunteer and give back to the Mīharo Community.

Thank you to our fundraising group that cover the cost for the buses on the day, this is a considerable cost and we are grateful for your support.

We made up a behind the scenes snippet of the day and posted it on our facebook page https://fb.watch/uwu0pMHGUW/

In Week 7, We welcomed Fynn to room 1

We also had book week, with a character dress up day!!

The theme this year is ‘Catch the Reading Bug!’ it was wonderful to see the characters come through the gate!!

Here are our Staff, along with the KoTaku Reo Staff!!

We really embrace dressing up!!

Have a look at the school Facebook page for many many more wonderful costumes/outfits!!

Term 3 has been jam packed with plenty of fun activities, and lots of learning and opportunities.

Well done to Eva who presented her speech ‘Colac Bay – The Bay that Has it all’, at the Year 5&6 Central/Eastern Speech Competition in Winton .

It was very informative and personal.

We are proud of you!

We are also lucky to have REAP take some Year 4-6 students in their second session of GATE Art with Louise.

They had to design a creature that was made up of at least 2 different aspects and then draw, paint and sew their fabrics together!

The work they created was impressive, and lots of new skills were learnt - including learning how to stitch and sew on a sewing machine

That’s enough from Wallacetown this term!

We are looking forward to finishing off this term, and the holidays – and then Summer will happen soon – and our pool will re-open!!
