Waianiwa School Action News
2022 has been a busy time here at Waianiwa School and as Term 3 draws to an end, Term 4 looks just as busy and fun.
We have had a school wide focus on our school values.
The students are working hard and doing so well at displaying all of our values.
Term 1 2022
Our students arrived back to school refreshed and ready to go for the new year – we have a new Room 1 teacher Mrs Kerr.
The Room 1 children are loving Mrs Kerr and she has settled into Waianiwa School well.
We welcomed Southern Reap’s Swim Safe Programme – this was well received by our tamariki learning some vital swim safe skills.
Term 2 2022
Cross Country went ahead this year and the weather was on our side.
The students displayed our school values particularly perseverance and kindness, encouraging each other on.
All our tamariki participated and did so well, with 9 students making it to the Central Zone Cross Country.
Our senior students have an opportunity each year to complete in the Young Einstein Quiz held at Winton.
We entered two teams and they did very well with our Year 7&8 team being placed fourth.
Another highlight in our yearly calendar is soup and cheese rolls supplied by the Waianiwa Women’s Institute.
The children love this, the soup and cheese rolls were super tasty.
It is great to foster these important relationships with our wider community and particularly with a group of ladies who have current and/or historic connections with our school.
We were also lucky to have Dr Sue Galloway, through Southern Reap, come to our school and teach us some hands-on science, investigating and experimenting.
These opportunities for our students are well received and the children just love it, especially the experimenting side of things.
This was made possible with funds from our wonderful ‘Friends of the School’ PTA group.
Term 3 2022
We kicked off this term with the yearly Elgrego Magic Show - Our junior students attended this and it was a great adventure and we received some excellent messages which align with our school values; respect, to be caring, be supportive, encourage others, to show courage and be brave.
These messages are presented through all the amazing magic tricks including pulling birds out of newspapers and making a dove disappear.
Next up was our Matariki Celebration.
What a lovely evening we had celebrating and marking the importance of Matariki and what it means to us all alongside our families and whanau.
Our wonderful Friends of the School group purchased Lego for our library.
The students were so excited and loved getting busy building with the awesome new sets.
Another highlight for our senior students is the Central Cup Tournament.
We had two teams enter with one of our teams taking out the trophy for first place!
PALs, our Physical Activity Leaders.
We have a great group of students who introduce new games and activities for all of our tamariki.
This group has received some extra guidance and development from Richie at Active Southland.
It is awesome to see all the students taking part in these games and having so much fun!
Our Year 7 & 8 students attend Technology at Winton for a week once a term.
The students enjoy all activities involving, food, sewing, woodwork and electronics.
We have also introduced Hot Lunch Friday for our school and is run by our Year 7 & 8 students.
The students set the menu each week, compile the orders, count the money, work out their profit through income vs expenditure and cook and serve the lunches.
This is excellent real-life learning at its best and grows skills that will be essential as they move through life.
They are showing great leadership and responsibility.
A special whakawhetai to Lauren Hayes who oversees and helps with this for us.
